Idris Elba Sets ‘Luther’ Return at Netflix With New Movie Alongside a Beloved Series Co-Star
Luther fans have finally found the answer to the mystery surrounding the franchise’s future, with it confirmed that, almost three years on from The Fallen Sun, Idris Elba‘s iconic, unconventional detective is returning. Originally a hit BBC series that ran for nine years, earning countless awards, including a Golden Globe for Best Actor for Elba, Luther made the transition to feature-length production when acquired by Netflix. The 2023 movie The Fallen Sun received mixed reviews from critics and a positive fan reception, with rumors of a future for the franchise going quiet in the months that followed.
It has now been confirmed that Luther will return to Netflix in a new feature-length project, with Jamie Payne returning to the director’s chair, and, most excitingly, Ruth Wilson, who was absent from The Fallen Sun, returning to the series that made her famous. Dermot Crowley is also confirmed to return, as is creator Neil Cross to pen a story that, according to a report, “sees a new wave of brutal, seemingly random murders hit London, with Luther secretly called back into service. But the dramatic question is, how can Luther save London when everyone on all sides seems to want him dead?” Shooting is confirmed to begin in February 2026, with any release date or window still unknown. In a statement about Luther‘s return, director Payne said:
“Neil has yet again, created a wonderfully dark tale to bring us all back together. It’s a true joy to be back on the streets of Lutherland with the supreme talents that are Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley. I am also thrilled to be reunited with the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan played by the extraordinarily talented Ruth Wilson.”
Ruth Wilson’s Return Resets the Movie’s Biggest Wrong
As any fan of Luther can confirm, the character of Alice Morgan, played with perfect psychotic poise by Wilson, is perhaps the best aspect of the series. When Netflix announced the arrival of a feature-length movie, no matter what had come before it within the story, Alice was a character who simply had to be involved. Alas, she was missing, with Wilson’s quietly imposing presence on the series, and her pitch-perfect chemistry with John Luther, a glaring hole in an otherwise gripping tale. Speaking in a statement about the character’s return, Cross said, “Luther, Alice and Schenk are more than characters to me, they’re family. I never stop wondering where they are, what’s become of them … and what horrors might be stirring in the shadows of London while Luther’s not around. So we decided to get together and find out what happens next.”
Luther will return to Netflix. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for the latest stories.
