Pierce Brosnan’s Cult Classic That Grossed 13 Times Its Budget Dances Onto a New Streamer

Pierce Brosnan will always be famous for playing James Bond in big blockbusters like Tomorrow Never Dies, but it was a non-007 role that earned the title of his highest-grossing movie. In 2008, Brosnan teamed up with Amanda Seyfried, Stellan Skarsgård, and even Meryl Streep for Mamma Mia!, the family drama following an independent hotelier who prepares for her daughter’s wedding with the help of two friends. Mamma Mia! is currently streaming on Netflix, where the streamer announced it will leave the platform on November 15. Prime Video has saved the day and confirmed that it will begin streaming on the platform immediately after it leaves Netflix.
It’s up for debate whether Mamma Mia technically even classifies as a cult classic, considering it grossed over $700 million at the box office back in 2008, but it fits the other criteria. In the years since its release, the film has only become more popular, which is also credited to the release of its sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. Brosnan’s family drama doesn’t even have eye-popping scores on Rotten Tomatoes — it sits at 55% and 66% from critics and audiences, respectively, but these reviews were indicative of how many eyes have been on the movie over the years.
There have been whispers of a third Mamma Mia movie for years now, but it remains to be seen if the pieces will fall into place for it to happen. During an interview with Collider just last month, Mamma Mia star Dominic Cooper said he was eager to get to work on a third movie. This came after leading star Amanda Seyfried teased the possibility of a threequel to Collider earlier this year. If Mamma Mia 3 does happen, don’t expect it to arrive on the big screen anytime before 2027 or 2028.
Is Pierce Brosnan Playing James Bond Again?
There has been speculation about a potential return to the role of James Bond for Pierce Brosnan, and he recently responded to these rumors during an interview. “I don’t think anyone wants to see a craggy, 72-year-old James Bond.” He then softened his stance, saying that if Denis Villeneuve had something up his sleeve, he’d come back “in a heartbeat.” Villeneuve has been tasked by Amazon to direct the next James Bond movie with Peaky Blinders scribe Steven Knight writing the script.
Watch Mamma Mia on Prime Video starting November 15 and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
