Rebecca Ferguson’s Netflix Thriller That Sparked Backlash With the U.S. Government Dominates Streaming
In Kathryn Bigelow‘s thriller A House of Dynamite, Rebecca Ferguson stars as Olivia Walker. The Dune star plays an officer in the White House Situation Room who is among the first people to learn of an impending crisis when systems detect an incoming missile, of which the origin and destination can’t be traced. The tense film explores one of the most nerve-wracking possibilities in today’s world, explaining why it has captured the world’s attention. A House of Dynamite is the top film on Netflix for the second week in a row, according to FlixPatrol. The movie continues to spark conversation from all corners, some of it not so positive.
A House of Dynamite found itself at the center of controversy when it was revealed that the Pentagon criticized several of the film’s assertions. For example, the thriller claims that at 50%, the chances of the nation’s missile defense system working are similar to its chances of failure, a notion with which the Pentagon vehemently disagrees. “The fictional interceptors in the movie miss their target, and we understand this is intended to be a compelling part of the drama intended for the entertainment of the audience,” a memo obtained by Bloomberg reads. The memo claims that results from real-world testing tell a “vastly different story.”
The film also assigns a hefty price tag of $50 billion to the system, raising the question of how something so expensive can have such a high potential for failure. “The cost is high but not nearly as high as the cost of allowing a nuclear missile to strike our nation,” the memo says. It adds that today’s missile interceptors “have displayed a 100% accuracy rate in testing for more than a decade,” a claim that experts in the field dispute.
