Ella Purnell and Pete Davidson Cast as Odd Couple in Sci-Fi Romantic Comedy

Ella Purnell and Pete Davidson are about to spend some time gazing into each other’s eyes…or not, in a new romantic comedy of cosmic proportions. The duo is set to star in That Time We Met, a new rom-com in which a bad date turns out to have far-reaching consequences. It will be the sophomore feature for director Nick Lieberman, who helmed the indie comedy Theater Camp in 2023.

According to reports, Purnell and Davidson will play a couple who’ve just had a terrible first date, only to be informed that their unborn child is destined to be the savior of humanity. It will be the first romantic comedy role for Purnell, whose roles have tended towards the macabre, but Davidson, surprisingly, has a fairly extensive rom-com resume. He had a supporting role in the 2018 Netflix rom-com Set It Up, starring Zoey Deutsch and Glen Powell; cameoed in 2022’s I Want You Back, alongside Charlie Day and Jenny Slate; and took the lead in the mind-bending time-travel romantic comedy Meet Cute in 2022 with Kaley Cuoco.

What Can Ella Purnell and Pete Davidson Be Seen in Next?

Purnell’s Jackie may have gone to her eternal reward on the first season of Yellowjackets, her big breakout series, but she recurred in the second and third seasons, so it’s not impossible she returns for the show’s upcoming fourth and final season. Next up, however, she’s going to return as apocalyptic survivor Lucy MacLean on the second season of Prime Video’s Fallout, which is set to premiere next month. She’ll also resume her role as the murderous Rhiannon on a second season of Sweetpea. On the big screen, she’s set to face off against a horde of killer squirrels in the horror comedy The Scurry, and a mad killer in the slasher spoof Hot Ted. Davidson, meanwhile, will star alongside Nicholas Hoult and Anna Sawai in their heist thriller How to Rob a Bank next year, and is also set to appear in the stoner comedy Wizards! with Orlando Bloom and Naomi Scott.

That Night We Met‘s script was penned by Mitchell Winkie (The Ultimate Playlist of Noise). It will be produced by Matt Jackson and Joanne Lee of Jackson Pictures; Marc Platt, Adam Siegel, and Katie McNicol of Marc Platt Productions; and Ford Corbett and Nathan Klingher for Gramercy Park Media. Gramercy’s Joshua Harris and Mark Fasano will executive produce.
