Sydney Sweeney’s Most Controversial Project Is Suddenly a Streaming Sensation

Despite her recent box office woes, Sydney Sweeney remains one of the most popular up-and-comers in Hollywood. Her fortunes are almost certain to change with the upcoming third season of HBO’s Euphoria, the show with which she broke out. The long-delayed third season comes on the heels of a box office lull for Sweeney, which is currently being mitigated by Euphoria‘s sudden resurgence on streaming. The controversial HBO show follows the intersecting lives of teenagers in California, and also features Zendaya and Jacob Elordi.

All three stars, including Sweeney, have seen their careers hit the stratosphere following the show’s success. Euphoria premiered in 2019 and returned for a second season in 2022. Two hour-long specials were aired in 2020 and 2021. According to FlixPatrol, Euphoria cracked the domestic iTunes streaming charts on November 1, and repeated the feat on November 2 and November 3, beating out Mad Men and fellow HBO hit Chernobyl. The most-watched show on iTunes during this period was the perennial fan-favorite South Park.

Created by Sam Levinson, Euphoria drew controversy for its depiction of teenage life, much like the British series Skins had a generation prior. The show emerged as a hit with its target audience, and remains the fourth-biggest HBO original since Game of Thrones changed the landscape over a decade ago. Euphoria is currently sitting at an 87% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the second season’s consensus reads, “As willfully provocative as ever in its second season, Euphoria still isn’t for all tastes — but when its addictive ingredients are mixed just right, the results remain intoxicating.”

Sydney Sweeney Has a Major Movie Around the Corner

Since the show’s debut, Sweeney delivered the romantic comedy blockbuster Anyone But You, which earned more than $200 million worldwide and played a major role in reviving the genre theatrically. However, her track record since then has been spotty, with films such as Madame Web, Americana, and most recently, Eden, performing poorly at the box office. That said, she’s also attracting Oscars buzz for her performance in the upcoming sports biopic Christy, and will likely witness box office success again with the upcoming The Housemaid.
