Sparks Fly Between Charlie Cox and Zooey Deschanel In a Brand-New Image From ‘Merv’ [Exclusive]

There are plenty of good reasons as to why dogs are man’s best friend, thanks to their unyielding loyalty, cuddly tendencies, and ability to cheer us up when we’re feeling down. And then there’s the inexplicable magic of them knowing what’s good for their humans better than we know ourselves. Prime Video will soon be spotlighting the bond between owner and pup in the upcoming feature, Merv, and today, as part of Collider’s Exclusive Preview event, we’ve got a brand-new image that perfectly captures the production’s heartfelt nature. Starring Zooey Deschanel (New Girl) and Charlie Cox (Daredevil: Born Again), the rom-com centers on a couple who break up only to have the family dog steer them back to one another.

Our new exclusive look showcases the three most important characters in the film, with Anna (Deschanel) and Russ (Cox) sitting at a table while their beloved dog, Merv, cozies in between them. It looks like the trio is enjoying a nice sunny getaway, with Merv loving the shared attention that both of his humans are giving him, all while they spend time reconnecting with one another.

Breakups can be tough for anyone, but beyond the partners at the center of the relationship, shared pets are also bound to have a difficult time adjusting to the new normal. In Merv, the titular hound is struggling to get used to his new surroundings after the two people he loves the most — Russ (Cox) and Anna (Deschanel) — end their romantic relationship. After learning that Merv is suffering from depression following their breakup, Russ and Anna decide to go on one last vacation together with Merv in tow in hopes of cheering him up. But what they didn’t bargain for was the possibility that the sunny getaway might have been just what they needed to breathe new life into their relationship.

Meet the Team Behind ‘Merv’

In addition to Deschanel and Cox, Merv will also feature the talents of Saturday Night Live alum Chris Redd and Everybody Loves Raymond star Patricia Heaton. The project is the latest directorial title to hail from Olivier Award-winning playwright Jessica Swale (Summerland, Ten Percent), and was penned by Dane Clark (I Put a Hit on You) and Linsey Stewart (Suze). Colleen Marshall and Jeanette Volturno executive produce with Matthew Baer, Roma Downey, Kerri Hundley, and Kai Raka producing.
