Apart from network TV, one of the very best modern communal viewing experiences is that of the Sunday night HBO show. From Euphoria, to House of the Dragon, to The Gilded Age, HBO continues to dominate Sunday evenings, typically at 9:00 P.M. EST, with its suspenseful and shocking drama shows. As of this past weekend, though, HBO now has a new contender for its latest Sunday night show in its new comedy series from Rachel Sennott, I Love LA.

I Love LA may only be one episode into its eight-episode first season so far, but it is gaining so much attention for good reason, and everyone should start watching the hilarious new hangout comedy in time to catch up before the second episode is released next Sunday.

What Is the New HBO Comedy ‘I Love LA’ About?

I Love LA opens on the 27th birthday of its protagonist, Maia (series creator Rachel Sennott), a woman who works for a talent manager named Alyssa (Leighton Meester) in Los Angeles. Maia goes into her birthday hoping to receive a promotion, and then to celebrate with her boyfriend, Dylan (Josh Hutcherson), and two closest friends, Charlie (Jordan Firstman) and Alani (True Whitaker). Instead, Maia’s birthday only serves to remind her of all the ways in which her life is lacking. First, her ex-best friend, Tallulah (Odessa A’Zion), posts a photo on social media as part of an ad campaign that shows how well she’s doing back in New York City. Then, Alyssa puts the conversation about the promotion on hold, because she doesn’t think that Maia has enough experience to be a talent manager yet. Maia finds herself feeling more insecure than ever on her birthday, wishing that her life could have turned out more like Tallulah’s.

Maia tries to cut ties with Tallulah for good by blocking her on social media, but instead, a well-meaning but clueless Alani flies Tallulah in for Maia’s birthday as a surprise gift. The first episode of I Love LA shows the established friend group trying to navigate the new addition to their dynamic, which is especially tricky because Tallulah has such an overpowering personality and dominating presence. The show is very funny, both for its very specific lines of dialogue, and for the overt and subtle ways in which the characters in the main friend group butt heads with one another.

Tallulah immediately makes a bad impression on Charlie due to her aversion to bagels and her push to go to the beach, and later, she messes up the entire plan for the night by insisting on pushing back the dinner reservation by an hour. Even as it is obvious that Tallulah’s ideas aren’t going over well, she either doesn’t notice the frustration of those around her, or chooses to pretend that she doesn’t notice.

It is precisely the things that go unsaid in these conversations that carry even more weight than what the characters actually choose to say to each other out loud. Maia, in particular, has difficulty saying what’s on her mind and expressing what she really wants, leading her to get walked all over by Tallulah and Alyssa throughout I Love LA‘s pilot episode.

I Love LA is hilarious, but it also has a compelling linear main storyline in the newly-rekindled friendship and professional relationship between Maia and Tallulah. Maia still feels a lot of hurt and anger towards Tallulah because Tallulah bailed on their dream to move to LA together, and she stayed in New York and became much more successful than Maia. Maia and Dylan are even living in the very same place that Tallulah and Maia were supposed to live together, which serves as a constant reminder to Maia of the abandoned plan.

In spite of this, Maia is quickly drawn back into this intense and intoxicating friendship, even as it is clear that Dylan and Charlie have their reservations about Tallulah. Maia and Tallulah’s dynamic is one where Tallulah’s wants and spontaneous ideas take priority over Maia’s needs and plans for her life, which will definitely make for some interesting points of conflict and tension now that the two are so wrapped up in each other’s lives once again.

For viewers looking for a new HBO show to make them laugh and fill them with a quiet sense of dread waiting for things to explode, I Love LA is the perfect next watch, especially this early into its first season. While I Love LA is primarily a hangout comedy, it feels most reminiscent of dramedies like Girls and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which set up tension in their dynamics early on as viewers wait for the inevitable moment where everything will end up falling apart.

The sense of building angst and conflict amongst the characters in these types of shows is particularly apparent in the comments that the characters hold back from saying to each other, as avoiding addressing these issues only makes it so that they fester and become more important. The pilot episode of I Love LA ends on a high for Maia, as she now has her dream promotion and her best friend back. At the same time, though, it is also clear that the person whom Maia has to become in her friendship with Tallulah is going to be at odds with her true self moving forward, and this may even go on to cost Maia her other relationships.
